Types and Functions of Logistics Trucks

In logistics, trucks are one of the main modes of transportation for distributing large and heavy goods. Thanks to their large payload capacity and flexibility, trucks are often chosen by freight forwarders to support a smooth supply chain.

However, it is crucial to choose the right type of truck for a more efficient and effective delivery process. The truck you choose will usually depend on the volume of goods, the type of cargo, the route, and the destination.

Here are eight types of logistics trucks commonly used in Indonesia, both for intracity and intercity delivery services.

8 Types Of Logistics Trucks

1. Pickups or Mini Trucks

Pickups or mini trucks are available in two options: single-cabin and double-cabin. These trucks are ideal for shipping lightweight goods with a payload capacity of up to 1.5 tons or around 6 CBM, depending on the manufacturer.

2. Light Trucks

Light trucks, also known as truk engkel in Indonesia, are two-axle trucks commonly used to transport lightweight goods with a payload capacity of up to 5 tons. These trucks are suitable for intracity deliveries or short hauls.

3. Dump Trucks

Dump trucks are available in light and medium options. Their light payload capacity can accommodate up to 7 tons, while the medium one is capable of carrying up to 16 tons. Dump trucks are usually used to transport construction materials or bulk cargo.

4. Tandem Axle Trucks

Tandem axle trucks, also known as tronton in Indonesia, refer to three-axle trucks (one front axle and two rear axles) that have a total of 10 wheels. With a payload capacity of up to 10 tons, these trucks are often used to transport containers and industrial goods.

5. Twin-Steer Trucks

At first glance, twin-steer trucks (trintin) are similar to tronton. However, it has a different layout with an axle located close to the front one. A Four-Wheel Steering (FWS) system can turn four wheels for better handling. These trucks are capable of carrying loads up to 20 tons.

6. Quad Axle Trucks

Quad axle trucks (trinton) are a larger version of trintin, with four axles and a payload capacity of up to 30 tons. The FWS system makes them maneuverable even when the trucks are carrying heavy loads.

7. Trailers

Trailers are trucks with a very large payload capacity, between 20 and 60 tons. The cargo body reaches about 14 meters in length and 2.5 meters in width. Trailers are available in 2 options: 20-foot trailers (4–5 axles) and 40-foot trailers (6 axles, up to 24 wheels).

8. Wing-Body Trucks

Wing-body, or wing box, trucks are among the most popular types of trucks in the logistics industry. With side doors that open upward like wings, these trucks make the loading and unloading process faster and more efficient.

In Indonesia, these trucks are commonly referred to as tronton wingbox (a tandem axle truck with a wing body) or engkel wingbox (a two-axle light truck with a wing body).
