Understanding Ship Docking and Its Methods
What is Ship Docking
Ship docking is the process of moving a vessel onto the dock.
A dock is a specialized area equipped with facilities designed to support the construction, repair, and maintenance of ships.
Ship docking function is, among others, for ship maintenance, which includes checking for and repairing damage, and repainting the ship’s hull. This even extends to cleaning the hull section below the waterline.
This activity is carried out routinely based on international shipping standards, which mandate regular schedules for periodic inspections of ship equipment. This includes the external components of the propulsion system, the condition of the hull below the waterline, and the engine cover equipment.
All types of vessels can undergo the ship docking process, including military ships, cruise ships, and passenger ships.
For larger vessels, the docking process usually requires more facilities, such as dry docks, dust-free warehouses, cranes, painting facilities, slipways, and large areas for fabrication.
4 Methods of Ship Docking
Syncrolift (Dry Dock)
This is also known as a lifting dock, where a ship dock uses a lift to lower the vessel into the dock.
Floating Dock
This is often referred to as a ship docking method that uses a pontoon platform equipped with lifting cranes, mooring equipment, water pumps, and ship repair tools. This structure can then be floated and submerged vertically.
Graving Dock (Excavated or Basin Docks)
This docking method uses a pool-shaped structure located on the coast or a riverbank. With sturdy walls like a swimming pool, it can bear the heavy water load when ships enter or exit.
When empty, the dock endures pressure from the surrounding ground. Ships enter and exit the basin dock through a gate constructed from steel, resembling a pontoon.
Slipway Dock
This method uses trolley pads as the ship’s cradle. Once the ship is seated on the trolley, it is pulled from the water surface using a steel cable winch along a rail that extends into the water at a specific incline.
The docking process requires a significant amount of time and cost. Therefore, partnering with a professional shipping provider that offers comprehensive services is essential for efficiency.
