Introduction to Halal Certification for Logistics Service Providers
Legal Basis for Halal Certification in Logistics
Halal certification in the logistics sector, particularly in the storage and distribution of food and beverage products, as well as their ingredients, is gaining increasing attention.
The certification is implemented in accordance with Law No. 6 of 2023, which amends Law No. 33 of 2014 on Halal Product Assurance.
Dr. Muslich, the Halal Partnership and Audit Services Director of the Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Assessment Agency of the Indonesian Ulema Council (LPPOM MUI), said that halal certification is implemented in accordance with Government Regulation No. 39 of 2021 on Implementation of Halal Product Assurance.
This regulation stipulates that the entire manufacturing process of final products, including food and beverages, must be certified as halal. The certification covers all aspects, including:
Main ingredients/raw materials
Additives
Auxiliary substances
Processing services
Storage
Packaging
Distribution (including transportation)
Sales, and
Serving in restaurants, cafes, or eateries
Benefits of Halal Certification in Logistics Services
In addition to regulatory compliance and customer trust, halal certification offers other benefits to logistics companies, including:
Boosting Market Share: The huge Muslim market opens up more opportunities that will drive business growth and profitability.
Growing a positive image: Halal certification reflects the company’s commitment to Islamic values, which enhances the company’s reputation among customers.
Promoting operational efficiency: Adopting halal principles encourages strict hygiene and sanitation standards, which minimizes the risk of product damage.
The Criteria of Halal Logistics Services
Halal certification is intended to assure customers that the products they use are halal.
Halal logistics ensures that every process, including goods receipt, storage, packaging, and distribution, complies with halal standards. Below are some key aspects of halal compliance:
Hygiene and sanitation: Warehouses and means of transportation must be free from najis (impure) elements and meet hygiene standards.
Products separation: Halal products must be separated from non-halal ones to prevent cross-contamination.
Materials and equipment: Packaging materials and equipment must be made from halal materials and must not be contaminated by haram materials.
Personnel Competency: Every personnel handling logistics must understand halal principles.
Halal certification is not only beneficial in the domestic market but also crucial for meeting standards in export markets, especially in Muslim-majority countries.
For example, a vehicle transporting halal animals or halal animal-based products and a vehicle transporting non-halal animals must not be used interchangeably. All vehicles must be strictly kept away from najis elements.
In essence, halal certification is intended to ensure that the products are hygienic and provide better health benefits for the customers. The steps to get halal certification are as follows.
Initial Preparation
Forming a Halal Management Team: The team is responsible for handling the entire certification process and implementing halal principles.
Attending Halal Training: The training provides an in-depth understanding of the concept of halal and the certification process.
Internal Auditing: Conduct a preliminary evaluation of the company’s eligibility for halal certification.
Submitting the Application
Register for a SIHALAL account: File a certification application on BPJPH’s online platform SIHALAL.
Preparing Documents: Prepare supporting documents, such as a company profile, halal quality manual, company policies, and evidence of implementing halal standards.
Submitting the Application: Upload all the documents to the platform and make an official application.
Auditing Process
Document Evaluation: The Halal Inspection Agency (LPH) will assess whether the required documents are complete and appropriate.
On-site auditing: The LPH inspects the implementation of halal principles on the ground.
Certificate Issuance
Preparing Auditing Reports: The LPH submits the auditing results to the Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (BPJPH).
BPJPH’s Review and Decision: The BPJPH reviews the reports and determines the issuance of certificates.
Halal Certificate Issuance: If all the requirements are met, the company will receive a halal certificate.
For your information, a halal certificate is valid for four years and can be extended by reapplying to the BPJPH.
