Get to Know HS Codes An Essential Term in International Trade
In international trade, exporters and importers must understand key technical terms to ensure that shipping and customs processes run smoothly and efficiently.
One of the most common terms found in customs documentation is the HS Code. Although it appears as a simple sequence of numbers, the HS Code plays a critical role in enabling seamless cross-border trade.
What Is an HS Code?
An HS Code (Harmonized System Code) is an internationally standardized classification system used to identify goods traded globally. Developed and maintained by the World Customs Organization (WCO), the HS Code is applied in more than 200 countries worldwide.
Every product involved in international trade—ranging from raw materials and food products to electronics, textiles, and automotive spare parts—must be classified under a specific HS Code.
By standardizing product identification, HS Codes help create a structured and consistent customs process across countries and regions.
Why Are HS Codes Important in International Trade?
HS Codes play a vital role throughout the global trade ecosystem. Key reasons include:
Determining Taxes and Import Duty Tariffs
Each type of product is subject to different import duties and taxes. HS codes enable customs authorities to accurately determine applicable tariff rates.
Reducing the Risk of Shipping Errors
Correct HS Code classification minimizes the risk of misdeclaration, which can delay customs clearance.
Ensuring Regulatory Compliance
Certain goods are subject to special permits or safety standards. HS Codes help identify products that require specific regulatory treatment.
Supporting Trade Statistics and Analysis
Governments rely on HS Code data to monitor national import-export volumes.
Incorrect HS Code classification can lead to shipment delays, fines, and increased logistics costs.
How to Check an HS Code
Exporters and importers can identify HS Codes through several official and reliable sources, including:
- The Indonesian Customs Portal: https://www.insw.go.id/eservice.insw.go.id
- Product catalogs or technical documents from suppliers or manufacturers
- Consultations with freight forwarders or professional logistics providers
It is strongly recommended to compare the product description with its physical characteristics and technical specifications—such as materials, functions, shapes, and manufacturing processes—since even minor discrepancies can result in a different HS Code classification.
How to Read an HS Code
HS Codes generally consist of six digits. However, individual countries may add extra digits to provide more detailed classifications.
Basic Structure of an HS Code:
- First two digits: Main product category
- Next two digits: Subcategory
- Last two digits: Specific product details
Example: HS Code 8471.30 refers to an automatic data processing machine, such as a computer.
In Indonesia and other ASEAN countries, HS Codes typically consist of eight to ten digits, depending on tariff and statistical requirements.
HS Code Validity and Updates
The HS Code classification system is updated every five years by the WCO to reflect technological advancements, new materials, and evolving globaltrade patterns.
As a result, exporters and importers must stay informed about HS Code updates to avoid misclassification when preparing customs documentation.
Do Different Countries Use Different HS Codes?
The first six digits of an HS Code are internationally standardized and recognized across all participating countries.
However, countries may apply additional digits for local tariff, regulatory, or statistical purposes. In summary:
- First six digits: Uniform worldwide
- Additional digits: = May vary by country
